A tranny question

What is worn out or out of adjustment that would be causing the tranny to pop out of gear (2nd. in my case)on acceleration?

Synchronizer, usually.
Does it pop out when you back off the gas?

It can be bent or loose shift forks too, but then it's usually stiff and/or sloppy at the shifter.

If one of these tranmissions pops out in fourth, it's usually from the driver resting his hand on the shifter while cruising down the road.
With popping out in 2nd and 3rd, it's mostly just wear and tear.

Thanks!! I kinda suspected a worn synchro! It's one of my "spare" trannies not in the car, so that is what I will look for!

mine did that.....the gear was worn, and first was completely chewed up......i rebuilt it...
ill be doin it again very soon as it sticks in neutral
for some reason....zimmmy

Yikes...I rest my hand on my shifter (easy...) when I'm driving. Nothing else to do with it... Guess I better find a new bad habit, I didn't think I was doing any damage.

I still have a decent spare Mogog transmission but what I didn't like about it was that all the syncro material was worn off the gears but the gears were still good. You have to buy new gears at $$$ to get new syncro material.

I have found that when the shift forks get worn (from holding onto the shifter...as above) it will not go completely into gear and start popping out. Been my experience!

My tranny went into gear just fine, but I had to hold it there to prevent it from popping out until the next shift! Other than that, it was working fine!!

When I was in college, a good friend of mine had an 1147 Spitfire.

It always popped out of fourth gear.

Onetime, we drove the thing to Florida from NJ with three guys in it.....me, him and his little brother.

We made his little brother sit in the middle and hold the car in fourth gear all the way to Florida (and back). :jester:

That brings back some old memories of crazy antics!! (never did an epic journey like that though!! Jersey to Fla.... THAT'S impressive!!
