A strange tail

Yep all the above Doug. Air leak not vacume.

I know you checked, but did you loosen the throttle linkage between the carbs at the flex joints after you loosened the idle screws? If not the linkage can hold the throttle plates open. Are the throttle plates aligned properly in the carb bores to the point you can't see light around the edges when the plates are closed? Leaks at cylinder head to intake manifold? Leaks on any vacuum hoses?

Think I had leaks at the intake manifold to the head. All those nuts were a bit loose and the carb cleaner was telling me seal was no good.

Tightened all up and just checked agan, I think I no longer have any leaks but I am driping wet.

Next trip out I will try to to an idle tune

Aye. Remove choke, seperate throttle rods, tune rear carb first blocking of the front one then reverse, etc etc.

Something very stupid is going on. I can not get the darn engine to idle down. I know this has been a prob all along but at least with the idle screws out I could get it down to about 900 rpm now no way and if I goose it to 2k or so it does not want to drop off right away.. Check check check

Guess it is time to pull the carbs and check all and replace gaskets.

There is one more thing to play with before taking the carbs off... at least if you're now confident that the leaks are gone.

Hook up your timing light and adjust your idle advance down a bit then try adjusting the idle speed.

Think I preaty well got it now. Finaly. Just took a lot of tinkering. Still not so sure my mixtures are correct. Time will tell of course.

Will try the timeing trick in the next week or so.
