You don't tell the people in Madeira, Portugal that they don't have enough land for a runway! They are very resourceful people. 1000 meters of runway is supported by 180 pillars 50 meters high, (about 17 floors). It's designed for the weight of a 747 with more than likely a high percentage over kill. Total runway length is 2781 meters.
