A-Series Dot-to-Dot Cam Setting [TDC?]

This question came up on a U.K. board I frequent and it made me go back to my manuals.

Haynes and others all say to put the crank keyway at "TDC" and the cam keyway at 1:00 to 2:00 o'clock position which will be approximately correct to fit the timing chain/pulleys back in positions with the pulleys in dot-to-dot alignment.

The question is... does the CRANK KEYWAY TDC position have anything to do with piston TDC? I seem to remember that having the keyway straight up and down didn't correspond to #1 piston being at TDC. Am I remembering this right or wrong?

Isn't it more correct to just say that the keyway lines up with the #1 & 4 journals.
Anyway, the Haynes book is apparently right. Crank keyway straight up when #1 & 4 pistons are up. Cam keyway at about 1:00 to 2:00 position. Then the sprocket dots line up.
The cam may still be a couple degrees out, but you would at least need a dial indicator, degree wheel, cam specs and offset woodruff key to fix that small problem.

Thanks for the replies. It's been several years since I've worked on my engine and the post on the other board raised this old question.
