My buddy over in Erath, La, bought an Esprit Turbo 4-banger and took the ENTIRE engine, tranny and turbos apart and rebuilt it. Had to manufacture some parts for the turbo himself, works like a charm. It gave me a headache just to go see this engine laid out on his work bench, what seemed like thousands of pieces. It now runs like a, well, Lotus. A bat out of heck.

OK I can be pretty thick on a good day, I've had a bunch of relatives in the house for Christmas and as usual I drink a bit through the holidays, so I am dumber than usual. What am I missing? That motor looks like the Alfa 1600 I am rebuilding in my basement. I know there is a joke here. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Naw TrMark, thats the standard old F I A T engine I see all the time.---Keoke- /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Yup, Mark... there's a discrepancy. Dale show'd us this photo of his TR Crypt engine bay in another post:

FWIW, The first photo above is a 1750. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Thanks guys. Just speak slowly and use small words, I'll get it. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Italians know how to do an oil sump don't they. So are you going to go the whole Testa Rossa route?

If that's what Dale is working on under the assumption he has a TR6, no wonder he's having problems, Doc. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
Sure looks like a "B" from here.

yeah. Had my attention for a few minutes!

prb51: Seven quarts of air cooled lubricant! That lump is now in my daily driver. Weber'd up and as "official" as I could make it. The RedHead treatment was as a joke with some friends... I'm th' guy with a Ferrari's "second cousin" for a car.

...and as homage to Shankle. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Hey Doc, didn't the 'RedHeads' also have red rocker covers? Or would that be too obvious? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Hey that engine photo was from the third old Brit
car I have encountered here on the island.

The Crypt Car plus two others. I saw this MG
dead on the side of the road, the afternoon after
the Crypt Car died and was pushed to the side of the
road.

3 Brit cars-- all spotted dead on the side of the road.
To me that represents 100% unreliabilty.

I stopped and tried to help the poor SOB but he had
not a single tool in his car. He has been running with
open throat carbs , (no air filters) and unhooks his gas
line when he starts the cars and pumps gas into the carbs,
then jumps inside and turns the key and pumps the gas
pedal like crazy.

I checked- his choke cables not not connected, his vaccuum
advance pipes are broken, his carbs filthy, his coil looks
original. Without tools there was little I could check out
other than all the wires at least being connected.

Know anybody what needs a batwing oil pan? Not using the one for the 1600, doesn't fit between the frame rails of the sports racer.

Doc, the Italian builders never went light with oil. When stationed in Italy I had a 62 Maserati 3500 GTI (in 76)if I remember correctly the sump took 9 quarts. The in line dual overhead cam, dual ignition, fuel injected 6 made an honest 285 HP and was tied to a ZF 5 speed. All alloy body by Touring and everything worked beautifully (silver-blk and red int)...why did I sell that??

heh... Yeah! Why DID ya!?!? Sheesh. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/jester.gif

That 6 and the ALfa 2600 were amazing engines. Three Webers, no waiting! The noises they make would now likely cause me to have an organism! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Had a friend that had a beautiful Duetto. We drove up (My Maser his Alfa)the Brenner pass enroute to Garmisch via Innsbruck. I hit the tunnels at about 125 mph and the arched open side had a light/dark effect like someone flashing a camera flash/strobe in your eyes, luckily I had good brakes too.
I sold it because it was my only car (in the States) and parts (they made about 2400) were basically made of unobtainium. I didn't have the cash to keep it until I sold it!

I understand. Frustrating.

Well lets see, no maintenance, abusing the engine, and he expects it to run reliably? Problably takes it to the junkyard boy for repairs also! I think this just proves that these cars are 100% consistent. Abuse them and they break down on the side of the road.
