Kurt.
No doubt! We were idiots back then, but we weren't fools. Or maybe we were fools, and not idiots. Either way, when I knew I was outclassed, I had no problem admitting it!
Actually, there were 'groups' of cars that kind of kept to others of similar 'class', if you know what I mean.
There were the high dollar, very custom semi 'pros' that ran against each other, and pretty much no one else. I remember a couple of very modified Z cars, for instance, who would only run against each other.
Then there were the high dollar off the shelf cars; your Ferrari, Masers, etc. Hollywood types. Not too many of those, and usually pretty careful not to scratch the paint.
And the Porsche guys, who pretty much kept to themselves. You know: "there is no substitute" and all. Some of them were pretty into it, and pretty fast.
But we were kids. Limited resources, limited brains. We did what we could with what we had, but for most of us it was really about the friends, the cars, and the good time.
And while I did dabble in the $50 races on occasion, as often as not I was just running against one of my buds just for the heck of it. For me, a lot of the time it really wasn't even about who won; I just liked the ride.
