I am sure this has been brought up before, but here is my delema. The original a post was thinned out and useless from the sill to the base of the top hinge. See pic....

To re-insall the new A-post Should I:

1. Remove the upper hinge and install the new complete a-post replacement. Attaching the door to the post to insure good gaps.

2. Cut off the the top of the replacement a-post at the level of the hinge and attach the door to the old top a post hinge to help get everything lined up.

3. Send the car to someone who has a clue and forget all your feble attempts at restoring this bugeye. :winner1:

I'm making head way. I have the boot floor cut out and the placement panel is ready to go in (after replaceing the rear valence). The floors are finished, the battery box is done. I want this car done before it gets rainy here (about 3 months)

Thanks
Paul

Number one of course. Might just as well do a complete job as long as you are able and willing.

#1, it is not as hard as you might think. Just tack it and double check alignment and fit. When you think you have it right, tack a few more spots and triple check alignment and fit. Then... finish your welds carefully so not to create movement in the piece.

Here's how I did it:
I bought the lower hinge (tapping plate)repair piece for both sides. Then I installed the full length A post skin replacement for the drivers side and the lower skin repair piece for the passengers side. Probably easier to buy the whole assembly and just install it.

When I redid my lower hinge area of the A Pillars, I only used part of the new A pillar because I thought it wasn't tough enough. I used 20 gauge steel and made it so it should never rust out again if it ever gets the chance. I did this a lot of places and the car probably weighs 10 pounds more for it, but it should last.
