Just saw a headline: "Half of America's living Medal of Honor winners gather at Gettysburg." It may seem like a nit, but one does not "win" the CMOH. Headline should read: "Half of America's living Medal of Honor recipients gather at Gettysburg."
 
I'm with you on this one boss - and a whole host of other linguistic sloppiness.
 
Agreed! I've even seen blatant mis-use and mis-spelling of English on BBC, as well as USA media. Of course, why do we need to think when we have computers to do it for us!

Anyone remember "Mrs. Malaprop"?

Happy to report that, once I fired off a note to the news outlet with offending headline, they corrected it. All is right with the world.

x2 ! Neighbor's son attends a very expensive private academy. Other neighbor's son attends a major public high school. I once asked them what they thought about the situation in the Middle East. Both basically said "It's a big mess - but Africa has always had problems".

And WW2 was between the USA and Russia. No other countries.

I agree, very annoying and I see and hear the phrase used all the time. Great to see the news outlet corrected themselves after you contacted them.
 
Yea, bugs me too. I took a behinds the scenes tour at the Air Force museum a couple years ago and the lady conducting the tour was showing use the restoration work being done on the Memphis Belle and the last B-17D side by side. As she went through the information I just had to raise my hand and point out that the history she had was mostly incorrect. The reply was that it had been provided by the museum historical office and all the volunteers who ran the tours assumed it was correct. Don't know if they corrected the tours later on but she acknowledged that the provided data was wrong when I showed her with the plane why it was wrong. And I don't consider myself to be a true expert. But I was astonished that the museum research could be so wrong when a walk round the airframes and their our historical records should have shown that.

Perhaps they used Wikipedia as a quick talking points tool rather than actual research...
 
We just recently had a meeting with our 1st grader's teacher. She said AND I QUOTE " They have to axe to use the liberry" :wall:

That's just a dialect thing. In West Virginia (my birth state) we would call a Creek a "Crick" and a wash cloth is a "worsh cloth" and we're taking a trip to Worshington DC.
 
The whole country thinks Washington has an "O" in it
