A new "radio"!

I am sooo excited. Check this out:

https://www.amazon.com/Dual-XR4110-3-5mm-Mechless-Receiver/dp/B002OMB7FE/ref=pd_cp_e_0

I have been looking for something like this for a long times. It's a tuner with an aux plug for my iPhone, but it has no CD or tape mechanics. It's only 4 inches deep so I can mount it in my (soon to be) custom dash without needing the giant, ugly, knee-cap separating console. It's not very powerful, but it should be enough to drive the speakers in my Miata seat headrests.

I can't wait for it to get here!

Re: A new "radio"!

Wow what a concept! A radio that's...a RADIO!

Yeah, I know how hard it is to find things like this. Manufacturers think we all want every possible bell and whistle. Often, we want just the opposite, but try to find it!

Good price, too. 60 watts of audio should be plenty.

Re: A new "radio"!

I would have bought that if I had known about it.

Re: A new "radio"!

I went looking for a simple AM/FM with a knob and dials. No techno-LCD displays or fluff or fake titanium brightwork that would attract thieves. I thought someone would still make, you know, a radio. It didn't seem like that long ago you could pop by the Radio Shack and find just such a thing. Nope. Not one to be found anywhere. I was lucky to find a NOS AM radio on Ebay. Dead simple, chrome and black.

And then someone stole it.

I'm giving up, and getting a transistor radio with an earpiece to put in my pocket when I drive.

Wait...does anyone still make transistor radios...? I may have to learn what an i-Thingy does.

Re: A new "radio"!

I'm going to buy it on Buy.com with free shipping for $36.99
My current player, a VR3 will only play 1GB SD - this will play an 8GB chip.

Re: A new "radio"!

This is great - I also grabbed a Kingston 8GB SD card for about $17 shipped.
This thing will fit my console a lot better and I'll be able to plug in my antenna. There just isn't room behind the VR3 to get it plugged in.

Re: A new "radio"!

My antennae is crammed horizontally across the rear of the cockpit, up underneath the cowling. No AM of course but FM is good. I don't like the look of antennas so much.

Re: A new "radio"!

Looks ok on a 78.
I wouldn't want one on my MK2 Sprite.

Re: A new "radio"!

I think from now on I will always do a radio delete plate, run a amp from the trunk and wire in an Ipod.

Re: A new "radio"!

I just redid a dash and covered over the radio hole. A while ago I made a "console" out of a cigar box, sits in front of the shifter on the hump, can be removed in seconds but at least I have CD (not that I care) ability FM/AM, iPod input, presets, lots of options. I think it is a good way to go for an early car where a stereo doesn't look quite right. This way it is less obvious and removable for shows.

Re: A new "radio"!

Oh man! I saw that radio on Amazon JP. That is the one I really wanted, but Amazon listed it's depth at 7 inches. I thought that sounded wrong. Doh!

Re: A new "radio"!

Here is my new "radio" in it's temporary mounting position. Eventually it will be mounted in a yet to be built custom dash. It sounds just okay on my Miata headrest speakers, though, I discovered that the original speakers were poorly replaced by the DPO of the seats. Also, the speakers are in very poor condition.

Re: A new "radio"!

I put it in my car yesterday.
Fairly easy though it would have been easier if my old connector and new connector were the same. No such luck.

The most difficult thing is always getting the console out and back in. This time I made a couple cuts in the back and bent up the metal so I could slide it in and out over the hump a little easier. I also had to cut out the hole for the radio a bit to allow the caddy to fit in, then bent the little ears to hold it in and slid in the radio after connecting the antenna and molex,

It works very nicely, it can take up to a 16GB memory card.
I'm having trouble filling an 8GB card. I have about 36 GB of music, but finding 8 Gigs of songs I think I'll want to hear in the car is a different matter.

My old one only could use a 1 GB card, it would not start from where it left off but returned to the beginning of the track last played. This new one remembers where it was in the track even if it is switched to radio mode. It has a couple other nice features, but I don't see how to make it play artist and song info - maybe it doesn't do that? My old one did.

Best part, since it's not very long / deep it lets me push my console back all the way and after connecting everything up my dash lights magically came back on. How weird is that?
(they have been absent for many months)
