Mr Newbie to Sprites here...Can I seek some advice??? I have a 62Mk2 Sprite. MY PLAN is to install a 1275 (if I can ever find one) put on a supercharger (Moss/Jonspeed/or Hi-flow - havent decided) Install a 210 5sp/rivergate kit, replace the front end with 72midget disc brakes etc, and the rear axle with parts from same 72 midget...I have the 72 midget...less the 1275 motor /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/frown.gif SO is that a good plan? Any suggestions from those who have actually done this before??? Any advice would be appreciated.

Welcome!

I'm currently doing something very similar with my Bugeye, minus the supercharger. I found a local 74 midget and grabbed the disc brakes, rear brake assemblies, 3.9 diff, and 1275. 1275s are out there still, just have to keep an eye out.

I'm having the motor rebuilt right now by Hap Waldrop (ACME Speed Shop). I kept with the naturally aspirated version for cost and simplicity -- should be plenty quick with the work Hap is doing. Quite quick, really. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif

We've got a few folks here running a supercharger, and they seem pretty happy with the results. Quite a few Datsun 5speed as well. You might want to look into the Morrisservice kit; I've heard that it's got some nice engineering advantages. I decided to keep the 4-speed in my car.

I run a 1275, disc brakes, and 5 speeds in both my Bugeyes and my 59 Austin A40. As for a supercharger, I never wanted one so others may be more informative on them.

Like Drew, I'm doing basically the same thing, but w/o the supercharger.

Hap at ACME Speed Shop is building the motor (1275) and it will be NICE! We located a core recently; getting one with a guaranteed block, head, and crank isn't as easy (or cheap) as it was a few years ago.

I'm doing a Rivergate 5 speed; ditto the comment above about easy/cheap.

The car will be reminiscent of the mid '60s weekend racers. It will be street legal (barely) and run on pump gas. Exterior will be smoothed; no bumpers, doesn't have door handles or vent windown, no badges, frenched tag. Interior will feature aluminum panels under the bonnet, Ron Davis aluminum radiator, aluminum dash with Autometer gauges, no carpet (heavy rubber mats only), race seats and harnesses, roll bar.

You can follow the progress and find lots more details on my web site https://www.raysmg.com (click on "The Spridget Project" link.

Ray,

Check out this link on E-Bay that is currently up for sale Item number: 280150554235. This car belongs to a guy here i n Dayton and there are some nice design treatments done to the rear end as well as the Bugeye Bonnet that was installed on this '71. The guy stole my color combination Honda S2000 Spa Yellow and BRG on the stripe. I especially like the treatment on the wheels rims. In person this one is unbelievably sharp to look at. Windows, windshield, and a passenger seat and this one is totally ready to go back from Autocross Use to the street. Almost back there already.

Two weeks till paint. Penske yellow w/silver stripes. Groovy baby yea.

Walter:

That sounds interesting. I am running a BE with a 1275, 9.5 comp, cam, ported, big valves, aftermarket intake, LCB, RC40, big exhaust, modified SU's, lightened Bottom end/flywheel, discs w dual masters, ribcase, 3.9, pertronics etc (that I have forgotten).

For me this is very hot, runs 80+mph on the highway w/o overhaeating, looks somewhat original and is a blast.

IMHO I know that the choice is yours, but save some money for the suspension, maybe 2k (etc-incidentals). And have some fun!!!

Keep your budget and dreams a reality.

Here is an old pic of the engine room.

Welcome, glad to have you aboard. There is a wealth of information and opinions here and we all are glad to share. You have a great plan. The disc brakes and 1275 can be had with a little patience if you can wait for an donor car of 67 or later(looks like you have already started), they are out there and can be found cheap. You'll learn more scrapping one or two lbcs than any other way. Also, you will have a wealth of parts. Almost all the parts are interchangable. Next, start looking for the 5 speed, because they are getting hard to find. "Out of the way salvage yards" that aren't crushing cars or simply finding one before crushing is the cheap way to one of these. Now about the finished car. Its a blast. Again, you have a made some decisions toward a great start. You might see if there is some type of British car club(MG or Austin Heally) and I'm sure you will find some help with info, parts and wrenching there.

Pat, you did take the paint of the water intake fitting and the radiator cap didn't you?

Walter...when you get your car painted post a picture. I'll just had my car painted yellow and I'm thinking of a stripe. The silver combo sounds nice.

You general plan is wonderful My $02 is the super charger is more trouble than it's worth - but then again, it's more technical than I'm capable of considering.

The general plan - update to more / modern reliability is wonderful. Did the same (doing) with my 64 Sprite.

To each their own with what is important to them.
