A little drive

Shirley and I are getting ready to take a drive in out TR6.
We will be leaving in the morning, the 13th and plan on being back on the 30th.

We have a network of friends along the way and one of our friends has volunteered to come with his trailer and get us if we have trouble.

This is a rough idea of where we will be traveling.
Indy, Churchill Downs, Ft Knox, KY Railway Museum, Lincoln's birthplace, Mammoth Cave, Custom's Museum in Clarksville, TN, friend there, drive by Ft Campbell, Nashville and several places there, Pigeon Forge, Tale of the Dragon, Blue Ridge Parkway, the sights along the way, friend in Greenville, SC; will be in car show at Mt Airy, NC, back on BRP and then Skyline Drive, Mt Vernon, LEWES - CAPE MAY Ferry DE to NJ, Valley Forge, Gettysburg, Flight 93 crash site, Marx Toy Company, Shirley's cousin in MI, and home.

I was at Ft Knox, Ft Campbell, and the places in KY in 1965/1966. Had my TR4 at the time. It will be fun to see them again and they will be new for Shirley.

Have you calculated what the total driving distance will be? Sounds like a fun trip! Like Don said...Jealous!

Sounds like great fun! Be sure to wave in the direction of the Staunton in the Shenandoah Valley in VA when you switch from the Blue Ridge Parkway to the Skyline Drive!

Hi guys,
We have arrived in Crawfordsville, Indianna. Could have gone further considering the time we got here. But we would not have had time to take the tour at Indy yet today. Stopping here will make an easy day tomorrow and we will be somewhere south of Louisville.
We left home at 9:45am and arrived here at 3:40pm with a stop for lunch.
The trip will be a little over 3,500 miles. We have it in easy increments and have a few days with little of no driving and are trying to meet as many LBC owners as we can.
The last time I went through Indianopolis was 1966 and I was driving my 1964 TR4. That is the trip when 4 of us went home from Ft Knox in that car. Made it in 6 1/2 hours. Wondering how much things have changed in tat area.
Planning on checking in with Trev in Louisville. Working our way to see you Micky.
Been cruising about 70 to 75mph and the car is running great. My laptop died last week so I am using a borrowed one and it will be a couple days before I can get the e-mail working.

As you are passing through northern Indiana on I-80/90 (Indiana toll road) take the 25 mile detour south on I-69 to Auburn, home of the Auburn, Cord, Duesenberg Museum. Allow a bare minimum 2 hours to digest all that museum has to offer. You will not be disappointed.

We just got back from dinner at the Creek Side Lodge. Dined on a deck over looking the Sugar River, quiet and relaxing.
I am driving much more reerved than usual, we want to enjoy our trip.

Lou, we came by way of Bloomington and even though we will be closer on he way home time will be short. Did you know they made a DuesenbergII. It was made in a little town, Elroy Wisconsin, where we lived.
 
We had a great day today. Started at the Brickyard. I was amazed at the changes since my last visit. The tour was very nice and the museum is fantastic. Took many photos. There were some cars running. A couple two seaters giving rides and a few single seat cars running laps. I asked if I coule run the TR out and runthm down but did not get far. I think they were afraid of being embarrased.

Then we ran down to Churchill Downs. Again a vast improvement over 1966. A veinbersi tour and again many pics.

Then we met Tevor at a returant. Found we know several people in common. Had a great car conversation.

Trevor, have a safe and fun trip to Elkhart Lake. Really enjoyed meeting you.

Then we headed towards Ft Knox to do a drive-by of the vault. On the way I turned off the GPS and we just struck out accross country. After about an hour we headed back and did the drive by. Shirley said oh boy in lower case letters. I told her at least she saw it.

Then on to Elizebethtown where we are spending the night. I called Mickey and we are planning on meeting tomorrow sometime.

We are keeping the planned rough schedule and having a great time. I will post a lot of photos on my site when we get back. And a few before that If I get some time with this computer to figure it out.
 
Tonight we find iurselves in Clarksville,TN.

We had a great day driving through KY and saw some great places and met several very nice people.

We stopped at the KY Railway Museum and talked with Greg Mathews the museum curator. Among the many subjects we talked about he explained the history of the French 40-et-8 rail car. I wii try to get more on my web site later.

Then we stopped at Lincolin's childhood home and then his birthplace. May not be a big thing for some but it means a lot to me.

We just got back from a very nice dinner with Mickey and Janet Richaud. We had a conversation about many things incouding british cars. Wonderful people.

So we are tired and need a good night's rest.
 
Really enjoyed dinner and conversation. Looking forward to reading more of your adventure!

This has been a great trip. And we have been meeting such nice people. While in Nashville today Shirley and I had a fun time with Wayne and Judy Witgenstein. And like with other LBC owners nothing but serious discussion and truth was told.
And there was a Shoneys, but I won't go into that.

You can see we changed cars. The rest of the way I will drive and Shirley will hang on to a rope while riding a skateboard.

We have reached the 1/3rd mileage mark of our trip and things are going well.

We have been taking many photos and will post many of them after weget home.
