A decision made for more power

My 5-speed kit was more than $250 but certainly considerably less than $1200. I used Morrisservice instead of rivergate.

Nevertheless, I agree you should focus on one thing at a time. Namely, a supercharged 1275! Afterall, what more is a supercharger than a way to increase volumetric efficiency. There is no rule that says you have to see how many pounds you can cram in there before it blows. No naturally aspirated engine hits 100% VE. With a moderate few pounds of boost you can increase VE and remain well within the mechanical limits of the engine. Then once you have a bullit proof rebuild, you can up the boost to match. Then a year or so after that, the 5-speed conversion will be a good idea. The 5-speed is definitely one of the best upgrades I have ever made to my Midget (of course, I can't afford a supercharger /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cryin.gif( ( /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif )).

At this point I can't afford a supercharger either. I like the idea, but there are many other things that go with it that I have to think about. The if-I-keep-the-Bugeye long range plan is to eventually get a second 1275 and set it up for supercharger duty. That also means better cooling needed, a switch to an alternator (generators are supposed to have some trouble with the added belt tension of a supercharger), which means swapping in an electric tach, which means going positive ground...

Lots of things for the future. I have a tendency to get ahead of myself sometimes, so I'm staying focused on the initial bang for the buck plan.

Owning a spridget causes all of us to make the decisions you are looking at. Do start looking for the 5 speed NOW!!! because they are getting harder to find and if you look sometimes they do turn up. If it happens, buy it, store it, because you will want it later. The ribcase you buy will always have a value, so you aren't out any money on it. The other thing, start looking for a junker spridget to get parts. You'll learn more stripping rust buckets to get motors, trannys, gauges, and any other parts than almost any other way. Good luck.
