A day without modern communications

Last Thursday, someone cut four of the five major fiber optic cables supporting Santa Cruz, CA and other locations south and east of us. While not sure who did it, the knowledge needed to do this could only have come from within AT&T.

Anyway, can you imagine a day without land line telephones, cell phones, Internet, 911 and all the things we take for granted. None of the ATM's worked, some major stores could not scan products, UPS could not deliver. Hospitals, clinics, and medical groups had no access to medical records. Charge cards did not work, check verification systems did not work. All of the state and federal government offices were down. Want some gas, cash was the only way to get it. We were back in the sixties.

Amazingly only one crime was committed during this period by some opportunistic low lifes who thought they could pull off a robbery. After all, no phones, but who would have thought the the local PD would nab them. The police and fire departments had all available personnel on constant patrol and as it happened, the shop owner flagged one down, the rest was history.

But alas, late Thursday afternoon, the systems were back on, and a trip into the past was over.

There is a $250,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of the culprits.

Ray,

This is not meant to be a political statement, nor do I mean to turn this thread into one, but with the recently reported cyber attacks on the national grid and the hijacking of our cargo ship with no action taken when the captured captain jumps the lifeboat in an attempt to escape from his assailants, those who hate America will be even more emboldened to strike at us from all directions. It doesn't take just airplanes or bombs to hurt our way of life.

Frightening how little it takes to cause such major mayhem huh?

Deepens my opinion that counting on 'computers' and the 'net as a major portion of our infrastructure is folly. Vulnerability to sabotage is waay too high.

That said, if the perp(s) can be ID'd and caught they need to be buried under the jail.

True - but ignoring the possibility of malicious destruction of any communications or network infrastructure, what's worse is the way so many people assume you can be communicated with "24/7".

I deal with a couple of people who will send me an email at 9am, then 10am send another to demand to know why I didn't answer the first, by noon I'll have another one demanding to know why I ignored the first two. When I finally get to my computer around 3pm (after flying all day) I'll answer the first email and ignore the rest... and the ones I get if the internet goes down for a day. Whewee!

Should I mention the guy that calls me at my work number and leaves a voicemail to tell me he's going to send me an email later? Nah - it get's weird.

We stayed in Antigua for 5 days with no internet and no cell phones.

It was actually very nice (and the run didn't hurt

Scott: Just wait until they have reliable INTERNET communications on commercial flights. Then you will be expected to be in touch without interruption. What did pogo say? Something like , "We has found the enemy, and he is us"

That is exactly why I won't get a Blackberry or that type of phone that will allow email. I completely ignore any type of text messaging as if it never happens. Therefore, I get none. I'd either get into an accident or never move from the side of the road from answering/reading/deleting spam emails.

And Pogo was right. We are our own worst enemy.
