That was my Dad's birthday, and he was already in the US Army Air Corps at the time. He was called overseas that day from his base in Jackson, Mississippi, and soon afterwards was sailing to Australia, and later to New Guinea where he spent the duration of the war.

We were at Pearl Harbor in February. Hawaii is beautiful, of course. But many sobering memories too.

What makes me sad is that today's generation has no sense of history. When I was growing up in the 50's and 6.'s, on days like Pearl Harbor, Veterans
Day, Memorial Day, etc., there was always stories about the sacrifices that were made. Even the comics would pay homage. Today, other than some cable shows, there is almost nothing.

I (unfortunately) teach middle school. They don't even teach history. The phrase, who does not learn from history is bound to repeat it, comes t mind.
