A small boat rescues a crew member from the USS West Virginia. Two men can be seen on the superstructure of the USS West Virginia, upper center, with the mast of the USS Tennessee in the background, Dec 7th 1941.

That was my Dad's birthday, and he was already in the US Army Air Corps at the time. He was called overseas that day from his base in Jackson, Mississippi, and soon afterwards was sailing to Australia, and later to New Guinea where he spent the duration of the war.

What makes me sad is that today's generation has no sense of history. When I was growing up in the 50's and 6.'s, on days like Pearl Harbor, Veterans
Day, Memorial Day, etc., there was always stories about the sacrifices that were made. Even the comics would pay homage. Today, other than some cable shows, there is almost nothing.

I (unfortunately) teach middle school. They don't even teach history. The phrase, who does not learn from history is bound to repeat it, comes t mind.

The phrase, who does not learn from history is bound to repeat it, comes t mind. Very true, as is proven in past history. Attributed to philosopher George Santayana. He also said, I'm sure you know, "Only the dead have seen the end of the war". How true. PJ
