So, I have a 76 XJ6 series 2 sedan in here. Guy bought it from Canada a few years back. We got it running back then, and he drove it for a while until the 5 speed shed the teeth off of reverse gear. Fast forward two years. The 5 speed was found, and replaced (I found it, but someone else installed it). They could not get the car to run though, so it was towed in to me. The car had a set of Euro-spec SU HIF7 carbs, and the horred AED starting device. I convinced the owner some time back to convert it to Strombergs w/ manual chokes from a series 1 XJ6 in the interest of driveability in the US. Picked up a set of carbs, rebuilt them, installed the choke lever and cables... Drained the stale gas, filled it up w/ fresh, and went to start the car. Hah...Checking around found that I had no spark. ( This car has a euro spec 45D distributor w/ points) I inspected the points-gap OK, opening when they were supposed to, and so on. Still no spark. I had a spare 22D distributor from some Jag or another, burnt points and all. I hooked it up to the appropriate wire, hooked up a ground wire, and spun it. Sparks O plenty. Humph. Reconnected the original dizzy, no spark. After some head scratching, review of relevant wiring diagrams and so on, I got a condensor (75 MGB!!) from a local store. Nothing. OK then, since the 22D unit works every time, I took it apart, cleaned it up, changed the points, freed up the centrifugal advance... I went to actually install it... Nope, won't fit, hits the lower hose at the water pump. (The 45D is a bit smaller in diameter)Great. Just great. Sat at my desk looking at the seemingly perfect 45D unit, poking and prodding with steam coming from my ears.... when I found the problem (I think). Genuine Lucas points mind you. Where the points pivot, on a formed in post, the plastic has worn there to the point where it makes intermittant contact from the current carrying "spring" to the base plate. I have ordered a replacement set of points to arrive tomorrow. Story to be continued. Gah , some days I really love my job....
