A day at the Spa!

Put the front plate & all its attachments in the trunk - when you get stopped, show it to the police & tell them it fell off & you're on the way to the garage to get it reinstalled.....hehehehe

Pennsylvania is more like Alabama than California.

[/ QUOTE ]Not to knock Pennsylvania – but the only experience I’ve ever had with their motor vehicle ordinances came when my wife & I tried to “give” one of our older vehicles to one of her family members who was in dire need of a vehicle. Anyway PA’s rather Nanny-ish DOT (or whatever they call it) nixed the idea because they didn’t like the “factory” window tinting. Sorry but I didn’t think it wasn’t that dark.

Every time the wife & go back there for a visit (two or three times a year) – as we're driving around, I always point out vehicles to my wife that had window tinting that wasn’t any darker than what was on the car we were going to give away. Cost me more money trying to give that car away than if I’d of just left in on the side of the road with the keys in it and my wife’s family member ended up with a hunk-o-junk another relative picked up at an auto auction.

BTW that vehicle sold for high blue book when we got it back out on the left coast for about $7800.00.

Yep....Window tint means city boy round here.

City boy = ticket

(Call it our "rural tax" to recoup some of our $ that goes to Philadelphia, Pittsburgh & Harass-burgh )

The loss of revenue the "RustBelt" suffered in the collapse of the steel industry has left politicians scrambling for ways to make up the deficit in any manner they can imagine. Fines and other "deportment" infractions are as good an answer as they can come up with ATM. Infrastructure is expensive "up there."

"Tallahassle" in Florida is about as culpable, BTW.

/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/lol.gif Ok I wouldn’t want to say anything good or bad “bout city boys”. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif But in their defense it’s hard to purchase a vehicle these days that doesn’t come with some sort of window tinting from the factory. In fact along the western border states you’d have to be insane or a masochist not to have window tinting.

You Californians come here with your window tint & it looks like yer making fun of the fact that we don't have any sun here.

Call it revenge of the pale people.

"You Californians" Not hardly. I'm just a good ol’boy that got himself trapped behind enemy lines. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Perhaps you could mark your car with some kind of Appalachian identifier while you are back.

NASCAR, Steelers & Veteran related stickers are big here. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

(And loose that front Ca. plate!!!)

a nice Marines sticker in the back window usually works... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Actually Military stickers go over real well here in San Diego too – in case you don’t know it’s a major pro-Military town. In fact I’ve got several Jarhead Stickers on my F150 4x4 and even a USMC badge on my MGB. But no NASCAR or Steelers stickers, but the wife has one on her SUV. She’s a transplant from a small town outside of Pittsburgh. While I was indeed born in Kalifornia I spent most of my life in Colorado & am a diehard Bronco fan. So I would sooner shoot myself than display anything on one of my vehicles remotely related to the Steelers.

Note the USMC badge on the MG & you can see one of the stickers on my truck too.

Ya can’t see it in that picture, but the bumper hitch cover on the back of my truck was made using a gold Birdie Ball & Hook normally found on those Dress Blues Garrison Covers.

OK...I wasn't going to say anything about knocking PA, but that STEELERS crack was over the line, Bret! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif I can't believe that someone from Kalifornia is poking fun at our stupid law /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/eek.gif

One of the major reasons for the tint prohibition in PA is for the safety of law enforcement officials, who risk their lives with every traffic stop that they make. A local officer here stopped a stolen vehicle late one night and the driver bent down, apparently to pick up the rearview mirror which had fallen off onto the floor...the officer saw the driver reaching down and picking up a metal object and thought "gun" but could not see for the tinted windows exactly what was going on in the vehicle...the result was one dead suspect, a police officers life turned inside out for a number of years, public outcry (from both sides), extensive and expensive litigation, and racial friction.

So keep the tinted glass in the sun belt and open up your windsheild and front side windows in compliance with our laws...and for everyones safety, please. Excuse the rant, but that is some of the history behind our stupidity.

I still think the biggest reason is no sun.

So far as the Steelers thing goes......I think Bret has suffered enough.

(Fortunately he's one of those Marines so he's probably used to it)

Whoa Bruce, rain in & ease up a little will ya? We’re all friends here. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Believe it or not Kalifornia has rules & guild lines too on window tinting too. There are acceptable levels of window tinting here that most folks should never have to worry about getting into trouble if they don’t add or exceed what came from the factory. But if you have a vehicle that didn’t come with any – the simple rule of thumb is “no tinting” forward of the B pillar. In-other-words, nothing other than factory in the drivers & passengers windows and the windshield (minus the upper most quadrant). But there is a “limit” to the level of tinting in windows to the rear of the B pillar too – can’t recall the numbers but it’s an easy bet it can’t be limo black. Anyway these rules exist & were indeed written for the same reasons you pointed out – safety of a lone law enforcement officer pulling over a vehicle. That is the main reason of my frustration with PA’s nannyish window tinting law – in that the car we wanted to “give” to my wife’s sister wasn’t modified at all - but was tinted as it came from the factory.

FYI I even got a fixit ticket once for “excessive window tinting” by a CHiPe. It was for an old company vehicle that an employer had given me when I first hired on, that used to belong to an employee who’d gotten himself fired. That employee lived in Arizona at the time and had in fact added “extra” window tinting out of self defense from the blistering sun.

As for the Steelers crack? Sorry no apologies. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif While I didn’t say anything derogatory – I stand by my comment, not because I hate the Steelers but because I’m a fan of a different team. Not saying its you but I find it pretty lame how many fair-weather fans jumped on the Steelers’ bandwagon “after” the Superbowl.

Heck, even Alabama has rules on tinting windows - police have to be able to see inside car.

Actually Tony, it's set at a certain percentage... Like must pass 80% of light, or something like that, and only applies to the glass in front of the B-pillar. And they have a meter that they can slide over any roll-down windows to test it too. I bought a car at a used car lot that had really dark tint on it (the Talon), and immediately drove it to the state police office to have them check it for me... then paid $25 at a tinting shop to have them remove it.

I think if the police can't see through the glass when they walk up to the car, they should be allowed to break it out! One of those plunger guns that, when placed against the glass, blows it to a smithereens!
