I've built several benches, usually from just 2x4's and 3/4 plywood and they serve my purposes. The only things that come to mind that maybe are not obvious are to make sure you beef up an area for a vice and maybe include provision for a roll of butcher paper that can be easily drawn over the bench. I use this constantly to write notes and keep the top clean (sort of). When it gets grungy I just tear it off and roll out a new section. There are a few paper clamps at the far side to hold the loose end.
