A top made of 24" x 96" X 1½" plywood (1 sheet of ¾" ply split lengthwise and doubled) or a suitably-sized solid core interior door covered completely with 16 or 14 gauge sheet steel held in place with countersunk flathead screws around the edges. The top overhangs the bench by 4 inches front and sides if the bench backs against a wall. 8 feet of 1/8" x 3" flat steel screwed to underside of front overhang to protect underside of top from damage when C-clamps are used to secure work to top of bench. Two steel, 4-recepticle boxes surface-mounted to the front rail of the bench under the top, 18" from each end of the bench. The frame of the bench is made of suitably-sized lumber to give the bench mass and weight.
