The result is that modern compression sleeves frequently will not seal, because the nut bottoms in the threads before compressing the sleeve far enough.

I solved my problem by machining a custom nut on the lathe, but Scott Suhring's solution looks more practical.

Fuel line compression sleeves are different than plumber's compression sleeves indeed. TRF (and others) have the correct sleeves. 5/16" inlet, 1/4" outlet I believe.

Interesting ! I checked "back when", but they must have found a source for the 1/4 sleeve since then.
However, I still don't see the 5/16 inlet sleeve listed on the web site. Do you have a part number ?
 
Paul's rebuilt pump arrived in the nick of time, it seems.

I was changing out one of my the fuel filters up near carbs
today. When I went to prime the pump and get some fuel into
the new filter, the primer lever broke upon the first squeeze.

Made in India pump, about 700 miles on it, 2nd time I used the
primer lever.

And THAT'S why we hoard OEM bits. In almost ANY condition they're more likely to be rebuildable/dependable than the drek supplied as "new" from some backyard faux factory usin' third world techniques to make 'em.
