97 XJR Electrical problems...HELP!

Can anyone help me with a problem that I'm having with the lighting in my 97 XJR? I have no instrument lights, nor switch panel lights. The background lights for the clock and climate control display are lit, as well as the odometer/message display. My fog lamps do not work and my parking lights do not light up, but they DO flash with the turn signals/hazards. Thanks for any help. Oh by the way, I have a Check Engine light lit.

Hi Steve, welcome to the Britsih Car Forum. Did you check your fuses?

Basil

Hi Basil,

Yes. First thing I did. Changed out the Dimmer Control Module and Instrument Illumination Module. Unable to locate a used Body Control Module. Before doing all this, even traced out the wiring....to no avail. I also need help in finding certain parts; but first thing's first.. Thanks.

Sorry, I honestly don't know, but perhaps someone else will jump in.

My response to your problem is delayed because I have been on a 2 week trip to Buenos Aires, Argentina. When I got back this morning Basil had a prompt for me concerning your problem. Unfortunately, I do not have specific documentation on your XJR so I have to assume that it is about the same as an XJ6 of the same year. That might not be a correct assumption, having had other similar Jaguar surprises. The first thing I would do is to get your car to a sanner with Jaguar proprietary OBD2 software. I think my scanner would handle it but there must be a closer one to your location. Without this information you are really shooting at straws. My first guess is that you have a lighting logic module(s) problem. If you get the correct replacement it would probably solve this problem but it is a gamble since it is not cheap. I will be glad to establish further dialog if you get more information on the problem These cars are increasingly difficult to diagnose without diagnostic information. Best regards and buen suerto. Masterdg,

Where are you in Georgia? I might know a few places in Atlanta other than Hennessy that you can get some assistance.

John,
Thanks for replying to my concern. As I stated earlier, I have already replaced the Dimmer and Instrumentation Illumination Modules. I was thinking @ the Body Processor Module. I know where to get a good cheap one (unbelievable, right?) Anyways, I live just north of Jacksonville, FL., and Matheny Jaguar is the dealer I would need to take the car to. I have someone who's an electrical specialist and a Master Technician w/ Jaguar who left the dealership to start his own business. The only problem is the "cost", and the fact that I'm a do-it-yourselfer". I have looked at enough of the wiring and schematics (for 98 Jag because I cannot get 97 Jag schematics) to think that I can work this out on my own. I'm supposed to get the EGR upgrade recall work done next Monday, and I may spend the money for the diagnosis. Just thought there was a similar problem that has occurred w/ someone else's 97 Jag XJR/XJ6. Appreciate any further help you can provide. Anything I have learned from this experience will be shared w/ others.

Steve

Also thank you Radford. I live in Southeastern Georgia. Matheny Jaguar is the closest dealership to me.

Hate to butt in - just curious why someone keeps alerting me to view this thread...something I should know about? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

There are a lot of differences between 97 and 98 Jag sedans. If you are going to do it yourself you need to get, as a minimum, the electrical schematics of the XJ6, 97. I have a Jaguar CD that includes schematics and other service information on the X300s. It is well organized and complete. I obtained mine through Coventry West. In order to do it yourself, you need OBD2 scanner/diagnostic capability. The only package that is affordable that I know of is GENRAD. It has the Jag proprietary codes, costs about $2600, and has worked great for me. It is also available from Coventry West. You just cant make todays do- it-yourself projects work without a computer and a scanner unless you have the luck of the Irish or an unlimited budget for buying spare modules.
