Like an ass, I hooked up a battery charged to my baby and charged it backwards (+ to -, etc), put in a new battery and when I turn the key all I get is clicking like it has a dead battery....... HOW BAD did I screw my car up?

I would guess, the least you have done is fried the ECU. After that I would check each fuse and relay in the car. Surprised there isn't a fused link that would protect you from doing damage. Every time I've seen that done the shower of sparks would let you know something was wrong.

My friend has a 98 XJ8 Vaden Plas.I don't know when they started doing so, but his key has a chip imbeded and it comunicates with the ECM.

While you can get a replacement ECM from a salvage yard, I can't tell you about whether you have to bring the car, key and ECM to a dealer for programing or if an import car shop can do so.
