HI all, i'm looking at purchasing a used (obviously!) 96 XJ6 that has 140K miles. How dangerous is that? The car has been dealer maintained, garage kept, etc. It's a beautiful car. I've never owned a jag before, but want one terribly! Any info appreciated! blondeshop

I've always been told that the Jag six cylinder engine is pretty bullit proof if well maintained. You'd want to do all the regular checks (compression, etc.). As for the rest of the drive train, the body , and the electrics - well, I'm sure someone else will jump in and give you some thing to look for.

BTW welcome to the absolute best LBC forum going. Glad you're aboard.

If it has full dealers service history then the mileage is secondary. The late Series III XJ6 was the best of the breed, and much better-built than the XJ40 series cars that replaced it. The XK engine always was pretty well bullet-proof, and everything mechanical is straightforward to replace anyway.....with the exception of the rear brakes that is! The biggest problem with those cars was always rust. If this one is rust-free, then it's a safe bet. How much is the asking price though?

Steve, The 96 Jaguar sedan is an X300 model, not a series 3, but I agree with you on the quality of the series 3; they were built in the 80 thru 87 time frame. A well maintained X300 is a fine automobile and has a great engine. There were improvements in the rear suspension and the transmission. The X300 also has an OBD2 diagnostic system that I consider an advantage. The 96 6 cylinder engine is far better than the first years of the V8 that began in 98. If it is a rust free car, go for it.
