I'm really sorry to bore everyone with my problems,
but I'm considering two trucks that I'm going to look at this
weekend.
- 1996 Ford F150-Lariet,302,5 speed,141K miles,$4000.

- 1995 Dodge Dakota,318 V8,automatic,124K miles - $2500.

Both trucks seem to be very nice,& the sellers
seem to be honest people. What would you recommend,& why?
I plan on buying one of these,as our '94 Dakota
seems to need more work than I want to sink more money into.

Ford.

As to why: To quote, "Let me count the ways..."

I had a '96 F150 - great truck, last of the body style before they went for the more "modern" look. And the 302's been around for a lifetime.

'Course, all that could change when you drive both of them.

I hate to say it but i vote Ford as well.

All else (condition, etc) being equal I'd go Ford as well.

x4. We have a '96 Explorer w/ the 5.0. That one is the high output motor w/ the Cobra GT40 heads, but basically the same. They are OUTSANDING engines. They're cheap too. Why? because they'll go 300K easy if taken care of and junkyards are FULL of good running 5.0's they cant give away. Why? Cause they never die. Hands down the best truck in-class that year. You'll spend that $1500 you "saved" real quick w/ the Dodge.

Why replace a junk Dodge with a junk Dodge? You already have one. Why buy anouther when you could just put $2500 in the one you got? You'd be better off that way ( if you stayed Dodge).

Ford all the way.

When you look up Dodge in the dictionary it says: "to avoid"

In a choice between a Ford and a Dodge......

I'd pick a Chevy.

Not for nothing, but those prices seem very high to me (esp the Ford). I'd assume they are in pristine shape for that kinf of money.

First step is admitting it.

Repeat after me, "My name is Doug and I have an old car problem."

I've actually had pretty good luck with the Dakota.
I like the size,power,etc.
On the other hand,I've always liked the way the manual
transmissions shift,& the looks of the Ford.To me a truck should be
boxy (look like a truck),& have metal bumpers.

I have a '99 Dakota, 318 auto, bells & whistles, and I really am happy with it, except for the mpg.

mpg 318 auto vs, 302 stick....prolly the ford gets better mileage.

Also had a small fire in the Dodge when the fuel line ruptured at the firewall and finding parts, even simple ones, was an exercise in frustration. Dodge parts books are the worst I have seen and the parts I needed are located where the wrecking yards cut through to remove the engines.

Love the Dakota but would recommend the Ford.

I've always had much better luck with Fords than Dodges - I find Chrysler products to generally be disposable.

I grew up in a Ford house (mind you, our arguments were Ford vs. Holden).

I love my F150 (2002) even if it's got a fairly ridiculous lift. It is the most ubiquitous pickup truck in the history of the world, that's really got to say something for it.

Ford.....hands down.

That 5-speed is a great transmission...the 302 is a proven power plant.

Parts are readily accessible and reasonably priced.

"Have you driven a Ford lately?!"

I plan on going down Friday & see the Ford first.
If I like it,I'll put a deposit on it to buy it,otherwise,
I'll look at the Dakota.
Our '94 Dakota Club Cab,V6,5 speed,air,criuse,has been
a good truck - bought it at 100K miles,now has 175K,& is
needing some repairs. We've had it for 10 years at Thangsgiving,
& feel that I would rather put the money towards another truck.
I DO appreciate the input here,as I was almost ready to write
off the Ford,& buy the Dodge, due to the price differance.

I drive an 81 Ford f150 4wd. 4.9 liter straight 6 single cab longbed with the fourspeed manual and roll up windows, I put the rear springs from a 3/4 ton extracab under it and it has served me well for many years. I like it.

Not down here. I heard they give away 2wd trucks in you neck of the woods. Them things like gold down here. $2500 for a truck here and it'd be gone in 20 minutes. can't find ANYTHING, (and I do mean anything) for under 3K nearabout.

I drove down - & found out (after calling), that the Ford had been
sold the day before. Why does this happen?
I think that I'll buy the Dakota,as it's about the same price as
the old one.
As Maxwell Smart said "Missed it by THIS much!"
