Rear of the block at the crankshaft is a half circle peice held on with three bolts. It has a gasket as well, think it is called a rear cover but can not find a reference. Found a reference and that is correct, rear cover but breakdown shows lock washers, I am almost sure that safety wire goes here?

The bolts are drilled for safety wire, does anyone remember is this the spot that wire is required?
I seem to remember that only one place on the engine requires it, is this it?

The Austin Healey Sevice Parts List shows three parts, a "cover for crank case" with no part number, a "joint for rear cover p/n 2A127" and a bolt, "set screw for rear cover p/n 53K1045". The illustration doesn't show a washer nor a wire through the screw.

Gesh, think I will safety wire them just to be on safe side. Those wholes are there for a reason I would suspect.

Jack, those bolts get wired. The factory just ran a loop of wire through all three bolts, and twisted it together. I properly safety wire mine, aircraft style. That cover is also part of the oil control, in conjunction with the scroll on the rear of the crank. There is a proper clearance to set it at when re-installing it. I'll do some digging and see if I can find the reinstallation adjustment procedure.

Wow, yep can and will aircraft safety wire. Not sure I understand how clearance could be adjusted but always willing to learn. Standing by.

All I see are three bolts no adjustment slots, is a gasket of course.

I recall it as Jeff describes. The wire was "twisted" between bolt heads with what I assume was some sorta "paddle" tool. There was a gap left by it between the heads. Aircraft wire 'em. Dunno about setting a clearance on it, tho. Jeff's the one to come up with the arcane data. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif
