948 engine with a 1275 head question.

A local guy sent me some pictures of a Midget he acquired recently. It appears to have a 1275 head, but clearly a 948 block. It was my understanding that this is no trivial matter. If this was not done "properly" what sort of warning signs could he look for without tearing the engine apart?
 
If it runs then it was probably done right-
Vizard says that the block must be carved out a bit to clear the valves since they will strike the block if you don't. Apparently he has done it and it works/breathes very well.

That is kinda what I thought. I told him to check the rocker arm placement and if it has good compression and no funny noises ... solder on.
 
I have a 1098 in my garage that was done this way. This has been discussed before and as I recall, there may be some water or oil passage relocation. Since the head is not on this block, I can tell you the block is definitely pocketed for the valves. The bottom end is still completely assembled and in good shape. I'll sell it to anyone interested as I doubt I'll ever get around to doing anything with it, though it might make a good candidate for he Judson SC I have.
