85 jag XJ6 improve it's performance ?

I bought an 85 a couple of months ago and it seems really slow from a standing start. I'm not looking for quarter mile times, just a little more peppy performance from a standing start. I've driven later models and they are much quicker.
Is there a computer in this baby that controls timing ? Any help would be appreciated.

If it is really bog slow, take out the O2 sensor and peer down into the catylist and check for melting/clogging. Check that the timing is set correctly, and that the mechanical advance works. (you should be able to turn the rotor one way and it should "snap back" to the rest position). If it has a lot of miles on it, it might be worth looking at the valve clearances and cam timing. Also, the trans has adjustable bands, be sure it is not slipping. All that said, with the 2.88 to 1 rear, it will never be a ball of fire off the line. Most series 2 XJ6s had either a 3.07, or a 3.31 rear, either of which will perk it up.

My coins are on the advance plate/springs.

Have you tried increasing the air intake flow and mass?
Try an aftermarket intake filter and setup for one.
