We have a nice series 3 XJ6, which sometimes starts right up, and sometimes, hours, days later will not start. Just cranks... Ideas?

Have you checked fuel pressure after sitting? There is a check valve in the fuel pump line that if it leaks can result in hard starting.

When it doesn't start, put the transmission selector in gear, turn the key on, but not to start position. This will let the fuel pump run,and presurize the fuel line. After a few seconds, then start the engine. If it works, then you have a leak somewhere, allowing the line to depressurize.
