$800 Fuel Pump!

Great Pumpkin - R.I.P

Wife's '93 C280 wouldn't start so I had a wrecker take it to the dealer...fuel pump is bad...$800 installed for new pump & fuel filter!

Plus, $500 for new serpinting belt & tensioner!

Ya gotta love those cars though....its got 120,000 miles on it & other than normal oil change type maintenance this is the first big bill on it - & its all things that just wear out!

Can't you adapt an MG mechanical pump? just drill a hole... I had the same thing with my Passat - also about 1k to replace - fortunately they covered it under the warranty - even though the warranty had recently expired - one good thing about being a steady customer. Anyway, he said it was because I was running the tank empty before refilling. Apparently the gas keeps it cool FWIW

Interesting about the gas keeping it cool...wife doesn't ever fill up - always puts a little in it! I think its just the name "Mercedes" on the parts that's so expensive.

I told her to look at it this way: $1300/10 years = $130 a year in repair costs...can't argue with that.

I can understand the $800 for the fuel pump, but $500 for the serpentine belt and tensioner????? I think I'd ask around a bit for that.

Depending on the complexity of the serpentine belts route and location, the labor costs, not the price of the belt, can be very high. To replace two serpentine belts on my motor home engine was $375.00. Minus $35.00 for each belt and it's not a Mercedes!

I guess I'll stick to my Fords and Triumphs then. My ex-fiancee' had a 1997 Ranger, that the tensioner went out on. She actually wanted to try and drive to work with no serpentine belt. I told her that I had almost had it when I replaced her transmission, and that if she were drive it to work, and warp the heads, that I was NOT doing the head work. She called into work, and I got the parts to change out her tensioner and belt.

BTW, my Mustang has 173K on it, and I'm still running the original serpentine belt. I have a spare in the trunk, along with the 3/8" drive breaker bar to change it out on the side of the road when it does go out.

$1317 was the total bill....like I said, lots in 1 whack, not very much over the 10 years & 120,000 miles she's driven it....its her 4th Mercedes since we've been married (39 years) so I figure I'm still out ahead....& they always wash a car, wax it, & give the interior a good cleaning when its in for repairsbut don't charge for that!

I can change the serpentine & tensioner on my '92 Sonoma but the one on my big Dodge truck is too complicated to do so....you can't even see the engine in her Mercedes because of all the things covering it to make it 'pretty', IMO!

Betcha that pump says "Bosch" not Mercedes. The one in my Bimmer went out this spring. Took me a while to get the right one. Seems 91 is a transition year. It wound up costing me $150. but the list price was $260. Pays to shop around. I put it in myself. I can't stand paying for labor.

If I had the time, I probably could've figured it out...but, my wife wanted her car back NOW!! Some things just aren't worth the hassle.

LMAO!!! I remember hearing that line from my ex-fiancee' once, of course I had been baking in a 100 degree garage wrestling with her transmission for the past 5 hours. I snapped back with, "I want a sammich NOW!!!!!"

I slept on the couch that night.

'91 was indeed the transition year for the 3-series.

meh... they slowly turned into pumpkins! :jester:

hehehehehehe... solong as it dosen't turn into a lemon.
Yup, 91 was the last year for the old 80s body style. Grab yer bag phone and crank up the M.C. Hammer you yuppie!
I can't help but notice how closely it resembles Nissan Sentras of the same vintage.

I have been checking prices for a power steering box and pump for our 230SL. Factory price for the steering box is $1300 and the pump is not available. I found a place in California that has a used pump and box for $350. They warranty them for 6 months so I guess I will give them a try.

I know that a person who owns a car like this should be able to afford the good stuff. What can I say, I have always lived beyond my means.

Pete - I've got an extra 380SL engine in my garage! I'm gonna go through the heads & timing chain setup so it'll be ready to go in my 380SL...those engines are getting more scarce by the day.

 Mercedes? GEE! I need to work on LBC's like you do! I just spent $997.00 yesterday up-dating my Snap-On MODIS so I can continue fixing these new-fangled cars of today! Just to think I could have spent that money on a fancy car! :nopity:

What can I say, Sherman? hehehe
