80 MG starting problems

Having starting problems!

Last week the car wouldn't turn over just clicking noises. Tried a new part on the starter and ignition relays and it seemed to be the ignition relay as it started when I replaced it with new.

Next day started on second attempt after first just had the clicking again. Gave the car a really good run and all was fine.
Last night came to start her up and just the clicking mainly with at one point the engine turning over slowly but did not fire up. After that it wouldn't start over again

Re checked all wiring again but must admit as a newcomer couldn't work out how to take the three wires off the started motor to clean and check it.

Beginning to wonder if it is some problem with the starter motor or the solenoid which I presume powers it?

Battery is new and have also replaced the ignition coil this week in my attempts to solve the problems.

Hoping someone might have some ideas??
 
New parts doesn't always mean good parts. New batteries aren't always good batteries. What you are describing is usually poor connections or a weak battery. Keep in mind, poor connections can cause a weak battery.

Did you clean both ends of each battery cable and the engine to chassis strap? Does there look like there is any corrosion under the insulation of the battery cables? Have you tested the battery voltage? Have you tested the alternator output? Have you tried tapping the starter with a hammer? Bushings in starters wear causing the starter motor to bind.

All the starter relay does is connect the brown wire to the white/brown wire when the white/red wire is energized. If the solenoid is clicking when the ignition switch is in the start position, the relay is working.
 
I would suggest nothing more than poor connections or a battery that is going south.
 
I had a '78 B that failed three relays in a period of a month. I finally discovered the relay ( I don't remember whether it was the ign. or the starter) was shorting out against the body panel on which it was mounted. I glued a piece of rubber under the relay connections, and no more problem.
