Spitfire '78 Windshield SS trim installation

I found a Stainless Steel Windshield trim accent that I would like to install on my '78 restoration. I have searched and found Whitey's tips but after putting hours cleaning and polishing the Stainless and too many hours to count trying to get that trim piece to go on I'm getting close to throwing in the towel and just put the plastic trim in. Does anybody have any tips/ tricks that I am missing? Thanks for any ideas.

This is where I quit my usual DIY adherence and call in the windshield guy.
 
The old mad dog has your tips.....
1 get an old school DA sander that can lock the orbit and function as a sort of grinder/polisher.
2 purchase several sheets of 1000 grit paper If there are major flaws start with 600 grit(or courser if needed)
3 with the sander locked , buff out the damages stepping to finer grit discs as you go. wear gloves and be careful of paper cuts.
4 When all is looking as well as you can make it, give the piece a good shine with 1500 grit all over.
this will take quite a few sheets as SS fouls the paper quickly
5 if your are OCD you can now move to jewelers rouge

Thanks for the responses guys but I have it polished and looking great- it's getting it into the rubber window gasket that seems near impossible. I have ½ of the bottom in and the first corner and 1 side up to the second corner. That was very slow going and the second corner is proving to be a hurdle I can't seem to clear - just looking for tips to get it into the gasket.
