78 Midget steering rack lube?

I pulled the plug on the rack while lubing up the front suspension.
There's something vaguely greasy on the end of the plug I wouldn't call it oil or grease though.
What is supposed to go in the rack, and how do you get it into that small hole?
I have heard some say oil, som say gear oil and some say grease.
If I could find a zerk that fits the hole would it be a problem if I pumped grease in there?

I bought an oil can with a flexible hose and conical brass end.
At first I squirted a little gear oil in and worked the rack back and forth.
Then I just held the end of the hose in the hole and pumped.
I have no idea how much should go in there but it has some now and that is better than the none it had.

Technically, the later style racks call for grease.

Then they should come with a zerk.
Being supplied from the factory with a plug cannot invite the use of grease.

Well the rack is a lot smoother now, I hadn't realized how sluggish my steering was until I added some lube!
Next time I'll have a grease fitting handy to install.
