'78 Midget carb heat shield?

I've got a '78 Midget (California version with catalytic
converter), and I'm trying to figure out if its missing
the heat shield that goes under the Stromberg carb.
I've look at all of the documentation I can get my
hands on, and all show something that looks like a
sheet metal drip pan that is mounted via the manifold
to carb bolts, and folds under the carb. My car doesn't
have this, but it does have a large plate (approx 6"x7")
with asbestos on one side which either mounts to the
cat, or the exhuast manifold (hard to see!). This plate
slopes down at about a 45 degree angle under the carb.

Anyone else have a California Midget that can help
me figure this out? TIA!

Hi Steve,

My very original Cali '78 did *not* have a heat shield. As you describe, the only provision to keep heat off the carb was a small metal shell that fit over the exaust mani.

( Having fun with that Stromberg, yet? )
HTH,
Duncan
