78 MG MIDGET EMMISIONS REMOVAL

What are the thoughts regarding the removal of all the California emissions on a 78 Midget? Would it be advantageous to remove the HP robbing equipment and perhaps swapping carbs? IF so, what would one have to remove, plug, burn, destroy and offer to the emission gods if one chooses to go down this rabbit hole?

yes yes yes and yes - Oh and yes!

Mine came with almost everything removed but, IIRC everything pretty much unbolts except you will need to resize the fan belt with the air pump gone and plug the holes from the air rail. Someone will be along to tell you what sized bolts those holes take and the more meticulous among us use allen head bolts but mine are just regular ones.

The Zenith Stromberg is a pain in the b*tt at the best of times but will not like it when the equipment is removed. Yours will also likely have a water choke which is probably broken (they usually are by now). I replaced mine with an HS4 MGB carb. If you use the rear carb from an MGB the bolt pattern will line up and you will need about 10 minutes with a round file to make the holes fit. At the same time I installed a manual choke.

You can also go to the twin HS2 carb setup of the British cars of that era. In this case you will need a new manifold and of course the carbs. I am given to understand that you have to notch the inner fender on the passenger side to make the carbs fit - However I have also seen people able to fit the carbs without surgery so I really don't know.

I found that an SU really woke up the car.

Oh and by the way you can probably sell the pollution stuff. Places like California still require the pollution stuff to license the car and no one makes it amymore. My stuff went to Hawaii.
