General MG 78 MG MIDGET ALTERNATOR SMOKES

Regrettably, I made a rookie mistake the other day installing a new battery in the 78 MG Midget. I installed the battery the wrong way and u know the rest. When I connected the POS to the NEG battery post, the rear of the Alt began to smoke from the rear immediately. I recognized the mistake and immediately removed the POS. I reversed the battery and connected it properly, but when I connected the POS CLAMP to the POS BATTERY POST the ALT began to smoke from the front. My gut tells me the ALT is FUBAR. Is there anything I can do or test before ordering a new one? Thank you in advance.

Your gut is likely correct.

Sorry too hear of the bad luck, but welcome to the forum!

I expect you are correct. There is likely an auto electric place in Medicine Hat that could likely rebuild it. On the other hand, this might be a splendid time to switch to an upgraded alternator. I have a delco in min and it works great. The only downside is that it is a little on the large side. Denso alternators are smaller and there are those who are using them off thing like John Deere Gators.

100% chance you have melted the diode pack / bridge rectifier, they dont like being reverse connected,
