78 1500 Midget Tire Sizes

Hello gang. Its time for me to put some new rubber on my midget and noticed right off the bat that the standard 155/80/13 tires on the car are not the "norm" at most tire centers in the area. I went on line and was able to find some on average @ $38 each but was wondering if the rim can take a different size that may be easier to get from the local tire store. Im not to educated on the limits tires can handle when using tire sizes that are slightly different then what came on the car. More so making sure the right clearance is there for turning in the wheel well and so forth. Any experts on this out there. Thanks.

there's a post on this recently. Try a search for details......

The main concern is the width of the tire on the square wheel arch.

I have 165 80 13's on my midget and that's as big as I could go. They're clear of the wheel arch and are pretty good on the front bottoming out. There is a bit of a rub when "locking the wheel right or left" or going over bumps/dips.
