T-Series 77 MGB Trunk Latch Adjustment

My trunk latch is giving me fits. I have to slam it so hard to get it to latch that I have shook loose the MG symbol on the trunk lid. I adjusted the lower part of the latch ( the part bolted to the body ) up as far as it would go but with no luck. Could the answer be to lengthen the slots in the lower piece? I'm drawing a blank here so any ideas would be appreciated.

Regards John

Okay, you adjusted the "striker". Make sure the pieces, mounted are as close to each other as possible, by slighty loosening the mounting bolts, holding the latch down then retightening the bolts. A lot of striker equipped cars use shims, under the striker mounting to position it closer to the latch. Initially, you might want to try putting some washers under the striker plate, around the mounting bolts. What helps for centering the striker is to put a little grease on the lip, try closing the trunk and see where the grease strikes the latch mechanism. This allows you to slightly reposition the striker, based on where the grease is contacting the latch cam plate.

Thanks, for some odd reason the word striker would not come to me when I wrote this post. Must be getting old.....Wait what was I just talking about?!

John - is your weatherstripping new?

I haven't replaced it in the year that I have owned the car so I really know how new the weather stripping actually is. It seems though that the trunk has always set a little high. I mean that you can see the weather stripping when you look into the eam. I always thought it should fit down a little closer.

Regards John

sounds like the stripping is relatively new then.

I recently replaced the stripping on my boot lid and experienced pretty much the same symptoms you describe. The lid seems a touch high in the closed position, and it takes more force than expected to get the lib to latch. The other thing I've noticed with mine is that it also takes noticeably more effort to press the release button once it's closed. You might not notice this since you haven't changed the seal yourself.
