TR6 76 TR-6 Fan Belt Replacement

I had to replace my alternator on the 76 TR-6 and was able to find a Remy 32107. Problem is now I need a slightly longer fan belt (looks like about 2" additional will be needed). Can the belt be removed/replaced without removing the lower front cross member? Can the belt be forced through the small opening between the crankshaft pulley and the cross member without damaging the belt?

It depends. If the engine and tranny have been installed to the rear as much as possible, you should be able to.
1/4" makes all the difference between "can and can't'

If you do need to remove the cross tube, you have to get most of the weight off the front tires by jacking the front end.

Depends on how much your motor mounts have sagged, humidity, barometric pressure and the stock market. You won't know until you've tried it. If you do have to go the raise the engine/remove the crossmember route, put a 2nd belt in there and zip tie it off to the side so that if you lose a belt you can be back on the road in a jiffy. If you try the crossmember removal route, I suspect you really don't want to completely remove it just in case it won't easily go back in.

Thnaks for the replies. At first glance it looked like the belt would not make it out, but I will try it during the day when I have a lot of light. The idea of a second belt tie wrapped as a 'spare' is a great idea. I would never have thought of that.

FLB76 - Rich gave you terrible and incomplete advice above. He neglected to mention if there was a recent full moon.

Otherwise - it is all good coaching. You really do NOT want to get into removing the cross member etc. Jack usually works.

Let us know how you get on.

I once jacked up the front end, loosened the bolts and removed only enough to wiggle the cross member back enough to get the new belt in place.

No.....I was not smart enough to put another belt in there, just in case.....
