Funny you should mention that; my lower speedo cable seized a few weeks ago, and I've been looking into doing the same thing. (I have a '76 too.)
The SIC (Service Interval Counter, that's the beige box 'twixt the cables) isn't really doing anything 'cept ticking over like a secondary odometer; when it reaches 100 it trips the EGR light in the center console to prompt you to replace it. The SIC can bind up over time, though, (a sick SIC?

) and that can cause the lower cable to break.
'77 and up didn't have the SIC, so I'd think a one-piece cable from a '77 would be a direct replacement for it...I haven't researched that thoroughly yet, though.
If your SIC is still ticking over, there's no reason to get rid of it, really. Even if it did bind up, you can take it apart easily and gut it, or just remove one little gear to bypass the works. Or you can lube it and reset it to zero if you want.
(If anyone's interested I can do a SIC dissection and post pics.)
