76 Midget Dash Removal

Okay, the PO chopped up the dash wiring harness and removed the center console. I've got a new harness coming in the mail and I managed to snag a center console on Ebay. My question is, what am I looking at in removing the dash? I've removed a dash from a car before (94 Miata) but was just wondering if there were any tricks or suggestions from the learned?

Remove your seats, remove the steering wheel.....get everything that's in your way out of the car.

then shrink your hands to about the size of a 6 month old child. piece of cake after that.

There is a line of studs on the dash waaayyy up under there with small nuts (1/4?) IIRC, once you have all those, and all the misc. wire connections and cables disconnected, you own it. best to leave the heater cable connected and pull it thru the fwall, maybe the choke cable to. If you temp gauge is mechanical do not cut the tube, you will need the thread that out as well or remove the gauge. Might want to remove all the gauges and glove box anyhow.

There's a glove box?

I guess the PO removed that as well...sigh

Theres a fellow in England who makes up aluminum parcel shelves for right and left hand drive Midgets. The 'glove box' that used to be in yours was made of a heavy paper board material. I had the intention of refurbishing mine, untill I came across the aluminum parcel shelf. He makes two types, one with a padded 'crash bar' in the front, and one without. I'm guessing the glove box door could be attached to the front of the aluminum parcel shelf. The vehicles in England do not have the 'glove box' door, as do the North American models, only the parcel shelf. After some thought, I have opted for the padded crash bar parcel shelf without the glove box door. I emailed him and he did make me one for left hand drive. I'll upload a photo of it to my rebuild picasaweb photos.

I really like it too! Just remember, you have to email the seller to order a LHD piece, and not get a RHD item by mistake.......and remember (as I always do!), a pound is not a dollar. 1 pound approximately equals $1.66.

Also, you'll need to email the seller your address so he can calculate Royal Mail rates for shipping.

Ahh cool beans, this is very similar to the MINIs I've had. We get a glovebox in the US and they get a parcel shelf. I'll need to get one of those, should hold a iPod very well.
