2wrench, after taking off the bumper, I don't see any reason to remove the rubber bumper part first, or if it's even possible. Here's a pic of the end result:
Even if the rubber could could off, there would still be that hefty steel piece that attaches under the car. I was shocked how heavy the rubber/bumper hangar pieces felt. One of these days, I'll get around to weighing one.
The hardest part of this job is definitely the 2 bolts tucked up at the end of the frame rails. The other 4 bolts, two each side, can be easily and completely soaked in PB blaster to ease them out; they came out relatively quickly. I'm left with Paul's 2 notches in the chrome bumper as well... I also used a thread chaser on all the studs, nuts and bolts here. They were pretty grungy, and I want them to go back in like butter.....
2wrench, you've got to get yourself a fluorescent work light to replace your incandescent one. One of the nicer things I've gotten for the garage, and it will take quite a bit of abuse. Thanks for inspiring me to tackle this job....
