About the carbs leaking - before you tear them apart try taking the drain plug out(or take the float bowl off)and LIGHTLY move the float up and down in both carbs.

Often when the float sticks open fuel goes everywhere it shouldn't.

Good eye, Roofman, the one and the same. This car was located about 10 miles away from me, but I could never get the seller to respond to any of my emails. At the end of the second listing, I emailed saying I was still interested..... She waited about a month before replying (while I was chasing a TR4... no response there, either).

It seems to me she just wasn't Net savvy. This car was her deceased husband's, she thinks he was the second owner, buying it from his next-door neighbor. It sat in a garage in L.A. since 1990. No maintenance records of any kind, though. Her son started to fix it up, hence the new wheels and tires(?)... If anyone likes these, let me know, they're going on eBay ASAP!

I've minimized the gas leak, but there's still a trickle, I'll do more searching on the net about these ZS carbs. This car must have double the wiring of my TR3; the ignition switch seems to be coming apart...is this difficult to replace? (gotta get that Haynes!) I'll have a ton more questions, thanks to the list in advance, and Happy New Year to all!

The 205's are the same as I run, and should be fine. It could be the offset is wrong for the wheels, or worn suspention parts is causing the rubbing. If you put factory wheels on, that eliminates one of the potentials.

Absolutely my intent, I just happen to have four TR6 wheels in my garage now awaiting paint; I got them 2 years ago for my '3, and never put them on. The tires are so new, they still have decal residue on the tread, so that's good to know.... I don't know what the offset on these "dino" wheels are, but the suspension rubber bits look surprisingly good, after a quick look. Thanks for the tire confirmation!

Funny, R6, I was looking at previous TR6 posts, and came across your brown TR6; showed it to my wife, and told her it'll never look like that! Any hints you want to pass along about bringing back the paint, I'll be listening! I thought about going the rubbing compound/polishing compound route, but before I do, tell me what you think...

I've got so many questions on this car, being unfamiliar w/ the '6, I might just take a day and start back at page 256, and troll thru all the listing, and answers... It would make for an enjoyable day, at least!

Congratulations, looks like a nice car, except for those wheels!
It should keep you busy (and broke) for a while.
When you buy a manual, get the Bentley one, it's FAR better than the Haynes one.

Any hints you want to pass along about bringing back the paint, I'll be listening! I thought about going the rubbing compound/polishing compound route, but before I do, tell me what you think...

Paint restoration is a very labour intensive process...and it will never be perfect once it's as far gone as your is...but if your not ready for paint right away this will be a huge improvement.
The first thing to do is determine whether you have a clear coat on it or not....if you do, then your chances of getting it really shiney are limited becasue the color under the clear has been damaged and you can't do much about that....but u can polish up the clear....Hopeully you don't have a clear coat, but if you do thats ok too..the same process applies, just don't expect as good a result.
1) Wet sand with 800 grit(only where needed, usually top surfaces)
2) corse rubbing compund
3) finer rubbing compound
4) 3M polish
5) Mothers Glazer
6) Nu Finish wax
You can do the polishing by hand or with a buffer....I've doen both ways. Every damaged paint job is different, so sometimes you gotta experiment...Those steps are the basic process I go through, but sometimes you need to get creative(eg, paint still looking dry but step 5? soak it with oil for day, then wax over top). And other times you need to know when it just isn't worth the time...my current TR6 has REALLY bad paint, so it's going in for paint in the spring.

Heres a before and after of a Camaro I did...It was a non-clear coated car that had done alot of sunbathing.

BTW: I've since sold my brown TR6(Boricua) for nearly double what I paid, the biggest difference came from polishing out the paint.

R6, thanks for taking the time and pics! I don't think there's a clear coat left.... I'll gets some 800, and play around with it next weekend. It looks so crappy, anything I do will be an improvement! I really liked the look of your brown car, but a respray may be in the offing a couple of years from now; this cars's a bit of a project, many things to do to get it decent...Thanks again!

Kevin, I assume u only saw the after pics of my brown one...when I got it, it wasn't much better than yours(a little cleaner maybe)just take your time and work through it, in my opinion nothing improves the look of a car more than a good cleaning.
