'72 Midget Runs On 2 Cylinders at Highway Speeds

Oh well, you know me I like to leave a bit of the solution to the imagination.

Could not agree more with the last posts.

From the pictures posted I'm betting its too rich on 3 and 4. I'm going to blame rear carb. Could be electrical cause 'most carburation problems are electrical in nature' but I'm going with rear carb. Bets anyone!??

Seems the obvious place to start. I'd like to see what a new needle & seat and a fuel pressure regulator would do.

Maybe some flooding due to the float-bowl for that carb? Any leakage out of the overflow at that bowl?

No leakage out of the rear float. #3 & 4 cylinders were running richer for sure. The shots of the spark plugs a couple pages back were taken immediately out of the engine after the symptoms were present while idling.

I got a call from my shop on Friday and they got it purring within half a day. I didn't get a chance to talk to the guy who worked on it though. Even worse I'm on the road at work Monday, then off to San Diego for a week of construction towards the TR6 I'm trading for. I won't be able to pick it up until March :-( Even more frustrating, part of the reason I took it in was to get the emission done. It used to be every 5 years in Colorado for cars older than '75, but that just changed to no emissions at all! I didn't find out until after it was done.

I have made good use of the Midget's space in the garage though.

I'll report back as soon as I find out what the culprit / culprits were. And post some pics of a victory drive.

Well it took two weeks, but I got it back and it's running like a champ!

My mechanic said the carb assembly looked good. He replaced both float needles with viton tipped solid based versions and corrected the float levels. One of the old needles had an oversized washer which might have let in too much fuel. He corrected the metering needle installation of one carb. Checked the timing, coil, valve adjustment and installed NGK spark plugs.

Nothing was a clear culprit, but the combination seemed to fix it.

Also the wire nuts on the coil were loose. This would be my blunder. I can't believe I spaced it. I'd like the think they backed off on their own, but I can see myself getting them tight and moving on to something else and not synching them down properly. He didn't notice it until it started idling a little rough. That might have caused an intermintent issue, but I think I it was carb tuning thing above.

Either way she is running like a champ. Thanks again to everyone for your replies and help. I look forward to getting to know you better through this forum.

I woke up at 5:45 this morning and caught a ride with my wife. She dropped me off at the park and ride where I caught the bus and longboarded the last 2 miles to the shop.

I had some errands in south Denver and drove it a total of 50 miles today. A sticky choke caused a little hesitation early on, but once I unstuck it she ran like a champ.

It was 70 degrees in Denver so I put the top down for the drive home.

Part of why it took me so long to get the Midget was that I was in SoCal getting my new TR6 running. I got that running last week. After driving the two within a week of each other I have to say how impressed I am with the Midget. I've owned other another Midget and TR6, but never at the same time. My Dad's Midget has seen years of hard use and even with rust in some areas if feels so much more solid than the frame / body TR6. The TR6 def has more torque (plus it's at sea level), but the Midget wins hands down in fun to drive, smile on my face, factor. It's just a better driver!

:cryin:

We will get some of that sometime, sometime...

YES!!

Glad it's sorted!

67 degrees and sunny is promised for Dayton today. Bugsy needs some exercise this PM. Sans Top!

Glad you got it sorted. A person on another forum that owns a TR6 and a Midget noted that the Midget has about 3/4" more shoulder room than the TR6.

On another note, it was 65 and sunny yesterday and I used the midget for my commute. It is supposed to be almost 70 today so I'm thinking of getting the Sprite out today and using it for my afternoon errands.

Congrats on getting it sorted! Once again, sometimes the best tool is a credit card - especially when it is a bunch of little things.

Calling for 55 deg today in Ontario! Don't know that Ms Triss will be coming out, but soon....

Glad to here you got it sorted!

I've owned quite a few brit cars but always avoided spridgets cause I thought they were too small for my 6'1" frame. Always kinda wanted a bugeye and when I got one fell in love with spridgets in general. Now everything else just seems way to big and clumsy!

Kurt.

Nice E type.

The other wire wheel vehicle is hilarious!

I heard its been snowing again in Denver if that makes anyone feel better.

I'm back in San Diego working on the TR6 trade and it's been in the 60's.

Can't wait to get home and get the Midget out some more.
