MGB 72 MGB Fuel Pump

The fuel pump clicks continuously with the engine off.
With motor running it still clicks all the time. Everything seems fine no fuel leaks anywhere.
Can someone give me a diagnosis on this.

First question is --Is it an original type pump? Some of the solid state aftermarket pumps don't stop. Next, if it is an original, the leak is probably on the pickup side or maybe there is a slight split or leak in the diaphram. Trash in the valves?? Is it coming up to pressure? At least 2 lbs approximately. Also the needles in the carbs might not be cutting the fuel off properly. I converted mine to gross jets.
I am replacing the points in mine right now (also a '72) and ran into a mod on line you might want to put in there if you are taking yours apart. Replace the capacitor with a diode which will prevent points burning better than the capacitor. Check out the picture on this site. Thanks for the advice. The pump appears to be aftermarket where continual running is normal. Ran into a local MGA owner who has the same experience with his pump. Will look into adding the diode.

Mrbassman, the diode required must have a capacity of 3 amps or better and have a working voltage of not less than 200 Volts. However, this lister seems to have an after market pump that can not benefit from the changes introduced for the SU component.-Keoke

You are right, sorry I missed that in the article. I just reread it. Yes, also right is this diode is only for the SU pump. No benefit will result using it with an aftermarket.

HI "MG" Bob, I think you should look into why the pump keeps running when the car ignition is off. This would seem to put an unnecessary strain{Discharge} on the battery when the car is not being used. Also see my response to the other Bob-FWIW---Keoke
