I took the bearings and races out of the hub and the spacer bearing. I don't have any idea what purpose the spacer bearing does. The ones I took out look beat up on the small end and in the parts book it shows shims and there were none. New spacer bearings cost $15 each. I don't have any shop manuals so I just try to figure things out. I'm puting the disk breaks on my 51TD.

Hi Barry, The spacer is used to strengthen the axel and set the proper bearing preload. However, it will accomplish this function only if the shims are used. The shims are used to allow a torque of ~70LB/FT to be applied to the axel nut while maintaining ZERO end play and ZERO drag on the bearings. Failure to set the bearings up properly can cause them to freeze on the axel causing extensive and costly damage---Fwiw--Keoke---Get a shop manual some things are not obvious.
