72 Hour Rivergate Conversion Challenge

8:00PM and the clutch and pressure plate are on. I've taken the first measurement from the clutch fingers to the back of the adapter plate. I'm very close to getting the engine and transmission bolted together for the first time.

Here's my problem. I can't figure out how the throwout bearing assembly should be put together. Here's a picture of what I have. Is something missing? The picture in the Rivergate manual isn't giving me enough information.

Thanks Tom. I think I've figured out that I didn't get the bearing carrier. That's a show stopper unless I find one of my local Nissan dealers who just happens to have one tomorrow.
 
I emailed the seller of the transmission and thank goodness they still have the bearing carrier. It should arrive on Monday, but that puts a stop to my 72 hour challenge.
 
It is always something ... good show though.

The bearing carrier arrived today, with the original bearing still on it. I'll take some photos showing the difference between it and the new bearing supplied with the conversion kit. I haven't made up my mind to spread the last part across the evenings or wait till one day this weekend to complete the last 24 hours.

One thing I'm thinking about is a cover to go over the hole for the starter. I've got some really thin aluminum sheet I can probably pound into shape, but the question would be how to fasten it to the transmission. Any ideas?
 
I have a cover that was made for my starter. I used three stainless 10-32 shcs's with washers to secure it. I drilled and tapped the holes for them in the transmission housing. To make the seal weatherproof I used RTV. There is a photo of the my cover on my webshots site but I haven't gotten around to taking a photo with it mounted. I hope to do that tomorrow. HTH
 
I took a closer look at the bearing carrier and the bearing that's on it last night. I tried removing the bearing and it won't come off. What's the best way to remove it?
 
I think it needs to be pressed out. If so, Save yourself some hassle and take it to the local shop, and they'll have it done in 5 minutes for about $5-10.
 
That you should be able to knock off with a hammer. Here's what I would do:

open your vise alittle more than carrier width, put carrier in first facing down and let the bearing rest on the top of the jaws, find a socket or such that'll fit on the inside of the inner bearing race that'll touch the carrier but not the race, tap gently and that carrier should drop right out the bottom.

It shouldn't be a problem.
 
Mine popped right off using that method......
 
I think I recall using the vise method also.

9:45AM this morning I decided to kick off the last bit of the conversion. It's nice and cool here which means I might use more energy toward work rather than wiping sweat every 30 seconds.

By 10:27AM I've knocked the old bearing off the carrier, fitted the new bearing and trial fit the assembly so I could take measurements. You have to measure from the edge of the bellhousing to the face of the bearing when the assembly is pushed far back. This is part of the calculation for clutch adjustments.

I trial fit the gearbox on the back of the engine. It fit on with a slight persuasion of my rubber mallet. Discovered I didn't drill the hole for the starter clearance just right. Blast! Whole assembly comes off the back of the engine and I set about with the new Dremel bit to add more clearance. Where I goofed was I took off more of the rounded part than the straighter part inboard of the gearbox. I'm about to trial fit it again. If it works this time I'm bolting it all together.
 
11:30AM I completed the rest of the grinding for the starter clearance. I now have a hole the size of a Buick, so I'm going to have to try and fit some kind of cover. Clutch throwout bearing assembly back in, transmission mounted to the adapter plate, and the starter is back on. Now working on fitting the top of the rear mount to the transmission. There's really no clearance for the nuts to mount it. I'm wondering if I should whip out the Dremel and grind a little relief there.

12:33PM Top of rear mount is finally on the transmission. Took out the old clutch slave and coppernic line, fitted the new CNC slave and have it bled. Hopefully that will help later on. Time for some lunch.
 
Honestly, I don't drink while doing these kind of jobs. I need every available brain cell! When it's all done though I will kick back and enjoy a bottle or two of Bass Ale that's waiting for me.
