TR6 '72 Engine in '74 TR6

The exhaust that came on the early cars was different but the later manifold and exhaust will bolt up with no problems. The earlier head had different intake port spacing so you will have to use the early intake manifold. The later one won't fit. If you have the early intake then I think that it should all just bolt in. There are some differences in emissions stuff that probably doesn't impact how the car runs - I don't know if it will be an issue for emissions inspections or not.

The early engines came with a little higher compression and a different cam. They had a little less peak power (about 2 hp less) but more torque so they were still quicker 0-60 mph according to the reviews of the day.

72 is a strange year... most of the 72's had the later head and the "dual" exhaust, but the rear transmission mount was from the early models. In a word, Yes.

The smog setup is really simple, if you keep it. I say go for it.

I have a TR250 engine in a '73. I had to use the older style manifold with the ERG valve. Given my 73 is exempt from California SMOG inspections, I simply blocked off the ERG valve and using the carbs from the 73, set up the emission control system as if it were a '73.

If the 72 engine has the later style head, you are in business.

But if the engine you are getting has the older style head, you will be using the older style manifold, and the car may not pass the visual part of the SMOG inspection in Calif. However, you can refurbish the 74 head, install it on the 72 block and use the 74 manifolds. In no time you will be back on the road and the car will pass the emissions test in CA.
