Spitfire 70 Spit - Interior Questions

Hello,

I am finally putting the interior in my car and a couple of things are hanging me up.

1) Should there be a sheet metal or maybe fiber board cover over the hand brake cable portion of the drive shaft tunnel; behind the brake lever? There are a couple of small holes in the tunnel that look like they would hold a cover in place and for some reason I have a mental image of something going there.

2) The rubber hand brake boot that I bought 6 years ago (the 1st part that I bought for the car) pulls out of the carpet when the brake lever is pulled up. Is this normal? I would glue it down but it comes out so far that I don't think it would hold. Does my hand brake need to be tightened? Is there more than one style of boot?

Thanks in Advance
I am sure I will have more questions
But I am finally getting closer

Dennis

I don't know the specifics of how a '70 would differ from our '72, but when we removed the interior from our car there were the remains of a cardboard cover behind the handbrake lever. There were at least two sheet metal screws through the metal tunnel behind the lever. I thought we had found at least one additional hole further forward.

We didn't know what this piece was supposed to look like and we were ready to put the carpet back in when we noticed the remains. So... we took a round one-gallon plastic jug, cut it in half lengthwise, and made cutouts as needed to clear handbrake parts and screwed that to the floor. It may not be right but it does keep the carpet off the handbrake cable.

In one of my cars the rubber hand brake boot was stapled to the the card board piece over the cable. I think that is what helps keep it from coming up.

Thank You,

Now it is coming back. I may remember a card board piece coming out. Hopefully, I stashed it with the old carpet. If not I guess I will make one.

I found it. A crumpled piece of cardboard with 1/2 of a handbrake boot stapled to it. I have to figure out what to make it out of; I could not get 1/8" masonite to make that bend. Maybe sheet metal, I don't have a stapler that will shoot heavy staples and bend them over on the bottom anyway so with sheet metal I can glue and rivet the boot on. Maybe plastic (corplast) but glue doesn't stick to it.

Any other ideas would be appreciated.

Thanks...Dennis

or find a later model with the arm rest type cover.

They are cheap enough on ebay and the like.

In the spirit of a car that uses card board for body parts I ended up cutting up a one gallon paint thinner can. It worked out quite well - it cuts and bends easily and when bent to fit it holds its shape nicely (at least better than card board).

I have been planning on making an arm rest. Looking for a sewing machine now that will handle sewing the piping in but I want to get the car on the road before tackling such niceties.

Thanks Again

Dennis
