'69 E-Type 2+2

Even if you keep the eared spinners you should grab the wrench if it's missing from the car's tools just so you have it.

That JOKER who is transporting your Jaguar needs to have a lession on the proper way to lash a vehicle to a trailer....tosser!

Whoa, steady on! This guy has many years of experience transporting classic cars, and an excellent reputation.

Come to think of it, do you ever have anything positive to say?

I am sure that he has many years experience. The main problem is that your vehicle is being held to the trailer utilizing only two welded fittings...on the out side rail of the trailer. On errand driver into the side of the trailer and snap goess the mount.

Listen, I am here to help. If you look a couple of posts ago, I offered you something. I am a professional restorer, and as such I have experience with classic motors of all types. Being in the business, I also transport vehicles to shows, etc and have friends that are in the business as well and would never think of transporting a vehicle in this manner. Sorry to be so direct, but that is the way that I operate. You should have your car today?

Yes, apologies and sorry for venting - I am sitting here on tenterhooks waiting for the guy to call me saying he's on his way, so I was a little tetchy. I value your and everyone else's help and advice.

NO PROBLEM!!! I know that you are waiting as patiently as possible for your new pride and joy. We need pictures posted when you are joined together later. Sometimes it is best to leave the driver alone to to his job and not mess about with the phone. Sorry if I amde you anxious?

 no ... I was already nervous!

Pictures coming imminently ...

Re: '69 E-Type 2+2 - What have I got?

OK, the car has arrived!

A few surprises ... e.g. "Where are the seatbelts??!" and also that my wife insisted on driving around the block in it. Also that it started right up and burbled away, sounding very fruity.

More seriously, I found a hole in the front passenger footwell floor :cryin:

It had been in a heavy rain storm on the way down from Sacramento, so the carpets were damp.

Brakes seem very good ... BW transmission was a bit clunky ... no appreciable slop in the steering.

I'm going to make a list of everything that I can see needs addressing, but I would welcome any and all comments about odd things or bad things (as well as good things!) in the photos:

I think this grade is called a "scruffy driver"? Which suits me fine since I really want to use it as a daily, and not have to worry about paintwork blemishes or having it stolen.

Re: '69 E-Type 2+2 - What have I got?

Julian:
Welcome to the club! Your car presents nicely, and I would be happy to happy to own it. It needs work to be sure, but if the price was right, what the hey. The experience of driving her, and the view from the cockpit, down that long bonnet are what really count.

What is the VIN? Looks like a close sibling to mine, built in April-June, 1969 I'd guess.

The main thing that looks worrisome to me is the vinyl clading on the sills. It obviously doesn't look right, and may be hiding something nasty. I hope not. My first Jaguar was a '67 2+2 that had spent too much time in Cleveland winters, hence holes in the sills you could put your fist through, although the floors were perfect. It ran like the proverbial 'raped ape" however. I once drag raced a new Corvette and beat it (this was in 1977), on ten year old tires and rusty wire wheels. Ah, the stupidity of youth! I doubt yours could be that bad if it was always a California car.

Re: '69 E-Type 2+2 - What have I got?

Hi Andy,

Thanks ... yes the sill covers are a little worrying, since they are often used to hide something. I'll need to see how they are attached and how easy it is to take them off for a look.

The VIN is 1R41300 ... so I think a bit earlier than April '69?

Unfortunately I don't have any history with the car, other than receipts for the engine work (actually I don't even have those yet - the PO has FedEx'ed them to me: arrives soon), so I can't tell where the car has been since '69.

It wasn't in xkedata (I just added it): is that surprising?

Re: '69 E-Type 2+2 - What have I got?

Julian,
Nothing I saw really bothered me until picture 65 & 66 of the sills' from the picture (66) it looks like there has been some metal patching done back by the rear suspension arm. I hope the rocker covers are just for looks. I thought the floorboard pictures looked pretty decent. I have always found the quickest way to get an idea of a XKE's condition is look first at the floorboards. Doesn't appear to have been messed with very much and you have a fun machine to drive around with.

Re: '69 E-Type 2+2 - What have I got?

Glad the motor arrived! I would have a look at the front screen seal as your issue with the water ingress. Looks to be a nice example with the correct bits. You may adjust the bonnet if the shins are in place...look at the pivot point. There will be shims at the top and front. Love the Nardi wheel...very dear at the moment. I had one myself, but traded out for an original. Front number plate fitting bracket is missing, but would think that they are about...wait and see if the copper's give you any problems. What is the extra wiring near the heater?
I would suggest switching out all fluids and filters, this may correct the transmission and you will know exactly when they where fresh.
Have FUN!

Re: '69 E-Type 2+2 - What have I got?

If I may offer the following general advice and I realize I may be teaching Granny to suck eggs.

Before it goes anywhere else, get it up on a lift or at least ramps. Get underneath it and go looking for structural trouble everywhere with an ice pick. Then look for any brake issues (leaks, lines, hoses, pads and rotors), followed by suspension issues (anything loose, bushings etc.). Check out all of the important electrics. Once you know that it is safe then short rides at low speeds to try it out. Develop your list of must fix now, soon or later.

Then have fun. You gotta E-type dude.

Thanks Marv - I'm going to be taking a closer look at the rear suspension and the rocker covers once I get it up in the air.

Initially I wont be driving it, until I've got a good feel for how solid it is and if there is anything "nasty in the woodshed".

Great input! The front screen seal - around the windscreen? It does look a little perished.

The right hand bonnet catch is bent, so the bonnet wont shut neatly on that side:

is there an easy fix?

I'm not sure I like the Nardi - it looks a bit new and shiney, not in keeping with the rest of the interior (!) so I think I'll be wanting to trade it in for an original.

I hear you on the fluids.

It's always safe to assume I am a complete noob!

I'll do as you say: it's now in the garage and will shortly be up in the air for close examination.

There don't appear to be any reversing lights on it?! Is that normal?

I've got an E-Type!

Re: '69 E-Type 2+2 - What have I got?

It sould have MGB reversing lite on bent over brackets that fix to the over-rider bolts.
I had tonnes of that shyte, but sold it on E'bay. BTW, check the U-joints for play for the clunk. Dry out the rugs, and spray the screen gently with a garden hose over the week-end when it is to be warm and see what happends. Save this job until you attend to re-spray if possible.

Re: '69 E-Type 2+2 - What have I got?

Bonnet locking pin bent out of shape is a common occurrence. Pretty easy fix. It will take a couple of times of R & R to get it right. Good chance the pin will break off when you try to bend it back but you can weld it up. Stronger as well. I have a good extra original XKE steering wheel I might trade for the Nardi. Not sure yet so don't hold me to it.
