'69 E-Type 2+2

I just bought a '69 E-Type, 2+2 with the 4.2 litre engine, and Borg Warner automatic (this is a major plus point as my wife is actually very excited about it!). It's not here yet (arrives on Thursday) but I have some photos, which I've been poring over (as one does).

(This car doesn't appear to be in xkedata - this will be rectified.)

It seems to have triple SU carbs - presumably from a Series 1. Here's a photo of the engine compartment:

Based on my reading of the E-Type books I have, it looks like the dual Stromberg carbs which would be on a USA '69 car have been replaced by triple SUs - do you agree? (I'm not complaining - perhaps it's even a feature?)

Comments?

First, congratulations! Yes, the triple SUs are something someone added on from a series one - but a FAR better setup in my humble opinion that the dual Strombergs that would have been on it from the factory.

Better by far. But if lovely California goes back to smoging these motors, you will fail. I would collect the proper bits and store away.

The triples will give it the much needed UMP, especially since its a auto car. From the picture of the engine, its looks nicely sorted. Congrats.

Thanks, chaps.

Here's another photo:

It has the two-eared spinners on the wheels. Again, that doesn't look standard for a '69, right?

Noobie question: will those tyres be tubed or tubeless?

Yep, should be the rounded variety. Is that a chome strip I see on the rocker?
Tyres will be tubed.

I can't quite tell if it's chromed, but there is a strip of some sort.

Here's another angle:

From the picture, looks like the typical 2+2 issue with the door shut. Also, the seal is missing from the bumper.

3 carbs instead of 2; sounds like a lot of work to me (tuning and cleaning etc.). Also it's probably better if you prep the car for California smog laws now. Tell you what, I will do you a favor and swap my 2 carb setup for yours; heck I will even pay the shipping.

You are on a roll now

From the other photos I have it looks like at least half the seals will need replacing ... the one on the tailgate for example is in bits.

I'll have some more detailed photos (and questions) once the car arrives.

I think the car is early '69 because of these springs for the bonnet (they changed to hydraulic struts later):

Thanks!

I can send you a box of Kleenex

No doubt once it arrives and I get up close and personal with it there will be some issues: but I'm prepared for that.

Save time and money and order a complete seal kit. My E is on struts. Simple to raise the front onf the vehicle, remove the pins and the bonnet moves further forward.

Finding and fixing the "issues" is half the fun!

The other half is driving the tires off!! :driving:

Second view seems to indicate rocker covers rather than a strip as you can see a line just in front of the rear wheel opening going from top to bottom.

Here it is earlier today, at the start of its journey down from near Sacramento to here.

If you don't like the spinners, I have an extra set of correct series two center caps. sorry don't have extra tool that takes them off.
